Q: How much does One Less Thing cost?

A: You choose the plan that best fits your needs. See the pricing page for details.

Q: When does One Less Thing bill me?

A: We ask for your billing information when you post a job, we bill your card after the first student applies. Based on the selection of your plan, you will be billed one time or monthly.

Q: How are students paid?

A: Persons Hiring pay students directly. The hourly rate and method of payment (check, cash, Venmo, PayPal) are mutually decided upon beforehand.

Q: How much are students paid? Should I include a tip?

A: Students are paid either by the hour or the project, based on a fee that is mutually decided upon beforehand. Students should earn no less than minimum wage. Tips are given at your discretion.

Q: Can students work for the same person on an ongoing basis?

A: Yes, as long as everyone is happy, we’re happy!

Q: What if the student or Person Hiring cancels at the last minute?

A: If you must cancel, let the other party know immediately. If you are the Person Hiring and have been canceled on, select new students and indicate the urgency of a response.

Q: Who should a student or Person Hiring contact if there is a problem?

A: Contact us ​if there is a problem and we will help you work toward a resolution.

PERSONS HIRING: HOW TO POST JOBS AND HIRE STUDENTS

Q: How do I invite a student to apply to my job?

A: When posting a job, we will provide you with student matches based on the skills needed for your job - simply click on invite. You can also browse students and invite them to apply for your job at any time.

Q: What is the “Quick Connection” feature?

A: Students indicate when they have three or more hours of time and are looking for work today or tomorrow. We will notify Persons Hiring as students are “Available Now” for immediate work. Customers can simply reply to those notifications and start an immediate chat with the student.

Q: What happens when I invite a student to my job?

A: We notify the student you have selected and ask that they apply for or decline the job.

Q: What happens when I create a job post?

A: When you create a job post it is available on our site for all students to view and apply.

Q: What if I already created a job but now want to notify new students about this same job?

A: Click on browse students from the dashboard, then click on invite student and select the job you are inviting them to.

Q: How will I know when a student responds to my job?

A: When a student responds to your job or applies to your job post, we notify you via email and text immediately.

Q: What if I do not want to receive text message notifications?

A: Persons Hiring can change their preferred contact method to email in "edit profile." Students and Persons Hiring can also reply 'stop' to text message notifications to turn them off.

Q: Why should I close my job?

A: Marking your job closed notifies other interested students that the job is no longer available. The post will also be closed so additional students will not apply.

Q: What happens when I click hire?

A: Clicking hire provides a calendar prompt for you and the student, sends a reminder to the student to confirm the job details with you, allows you to track the students you’ve hired and gives you the opportunity to review the student when the job is complete.

Q: Why should I review the student I hired for my job?

A: Your review will help students improve and land more jobs. Reviews also tell future people hiring what to expect.

Q: Do students review Persons Hiring?

A: Yes, students review the people they work for.

Q: How long will my job be posted?

A: Jobs can be posted for up to 30 days.

Q: When does my job move to Closed?

A: A job moves to closed: on the job date, when you close it or after 30 days - whichever comes first.

Q: What if no one responds to my job post?

A: We suggest inviting more students. Consider updating your job, be sure to create a picture of what will be involved.

STUDENTS: HOW TO GET JOBS AND MANAGE YOUR ACCOUNT

Q: How will I know when a Person Hiring has selected me?

A: When a Person Hiring has selected you as a candidate for their job, we will notify you via text and email immediately.

Q: What if I do not want to receive text message notifications?

A: You can reply 'stop' to text message notifications to turn them off.

Q: Why is it important to respond quickly to job texts and emails?

A: People hiring specifically chose YOU for their job and are excited to know if you are interested in their job. In addition, replying quickly improves your chances of securing a job.

Q: How do I get paid?

A: Persons Hiring pay you directly. The rate and method of payment (check, cash, Venmo, PayPal, etc.) are mutually decided upon beforehand.

Q: How much ​do I get ​paid? Can I accept a tip?

A: You can either get paid an hourly rate, or a project-based fee, that is mutually decided upon beforehand. Tips are given at the Person Hirings’ discretion.

Q: Can I work for the same person on an ongoing basis?

A: Yes, as long as everyone is happy, we’re happy!

Q: What if I need to cancel at the last minute?

A: If you must cancel, let the Person Hiring know immediately. Understand that your cancellation can greatly affect the plans of the person who hired you. They were counting on you. Offering a connection to a friend who can step in will often go a long way.

Q: Who should I contact if there is a problem?

A: Contact us ​if there is a problem and we will help you work toward a resolution.

Q: Can I review the Person Hiring?

A: Yes, your feedback is important.

Q: What if I am busy or do not want work at the moment?

A: You can change your account to Inactive in "edit profile" at any time.

Q: What if I am going home for winter or summer break but would like to find work?

A: Change your current zip code in "edit profile". Persons Hiring in other areas may end up finding you. Currently we are focused on helping students and recent grads find jobs in the Bay Area, but are working to grow.

Q: I am concerned about the safety of working in someone’s home.

A: Safety is our number one concern and you need to feel comfortable with every job. Before making your decision to accept a job, you can research the Person Hiring and ask them for references.

Q: How do I know a job posted is legitimate?

A: We do our best to monitor job posts however fraudulent job posters can be pretty savvy. Here are tips to help you identify fraudulent jobs.

  • You are asked to send a payment by wire service or courier.
  • You are offered a large payment or reward in exchange for allowing the use of your bank account - often for depositing checks or transferring money.
  • You receive an unexpectedly large check.

NEVER engage in any of the above, even if you have already started work. If you believe you have identified a fraudulent job, please contact us immediately and we encourage you to file a police report.

Q: Am I employed by One Less Thing?

A: No. Students are independent contractors.

CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE HIRING STUDENTS

Q: Who are the “Students”?

A: “Students” are current college students and recent graduates. College students pledge they are admitted to an accredited college, university or vocational school with intent to continue enrollment as a full­time student in the next quarter or semester [excluding summer]. Recent graduates must have graduated within the past 3 years from an accredited college, university or vocational school.

Q: Does One Less Thing employ the students?

A: No. Students are independent contractors.

Q: Are the students screened ahead of time? ​

A: We do not screen candidates. We do our best to encourage only responsible students to join but Persons Hiring should always interview students, read their reviews if available and obtain references.

Q: Have students been background checked?

A: Students have the ability to request a background check from First Advantage. Background checks are paid for by the students and are NOT required. People hiring can request students complete a background check.

ABOUT YOUR SUBSCRIPTION

Q: When does my subscription start?

A: After a student applies for your job, we bill your credit card and you become a customer.

Q: What if I want to cancel my subscription?

A: We’ll miss you but simply go to your profile, click on billing and click on cancel my subscription.
